That older operator's advice about load charts nearly got me fired

Back in March up in Dayton, this veteran guy Dave, 20 years on a lattice boom, told me to trust the load chart at 80 percent and not worry about the friction loss on a multi-part line. I figured he knew his stuff, so I rigged a 12-ton concrete panel at a 75 foot radius on a Grove RT, and the crane started to list hard when I lifted. Turns out his rule of thumb was for the old friction brakes, not the newer hydraulic units, and the chart was already maxed for the wind that day. The site super caught it on the camera and pulled my cert for two weeks while they inspected the outriggers. I should've checked the manufacturer's addendum on the cab door instead of taking advice from someone who never ran this model. Anyone else have a senior guy's old trick backfire on a newer machine?
