Saw a tower crane in Seattle that made me rethink my whole setup
I was visiting a friend in Seattle last month and saw a crew setting up a Liebherr 150 EC-B tower crane downtown. They had this custom rigging block with a built-in scale, showing the load weight right on the hook. I always thought those were just extra gear for the big corporate jobs, not worth the hassle. But watching them, they never had to guess or wait for a radio check from the ground. It saved them maybe 10 seconds per lift, but over a whole day, that adds up to a lot less stress. Has anyone here actually used one of those smart blocks on a smaller mobile crane, or is it only for the big tower setups?

Read about a guy using a smart block on a 50-ton rough terrain. Said the instant weight readout saved his butt from a near overload. Makes sense for any crane where guessing is a risk.

Actually, that ten seconds per lift sounds nice but it's not the whole story. Those smart blocks need their own power and add another thing to calibrate and worry about. For a lot of our smaller jobs, keeping it simple and knowing your charts is still the faster way.

Ran a 40-ton truck crane with a smart block for a six-month site job. The real win was the confidence, not just the time saved. You stop second-guessing every pick, especially when the load is odd-shaped or the ground is soft. It pays for itself when you catch a rigging mistake before the load leaves the ground.
