A retired crane hand in Tulsa changed how I look at site prep

Last week I was leveling pads for a mobile crane and an old timer walked up, said my blocking looked fine but my ground was too soft on the west corner. He pointed out that I was reading the compaction test from last month, not the rain we got Tuesday. I spent the next hour re-packing that spot, and honestly it made me realize I lean too hard on paperwork and not enough on what my boots feel. Anyone else trust the print over their own senses and regret it later?

Wait, so what was the ground actually doing when you walked it, like spongy or just wet on top? Ive had jobs where the print said one thing but the ground was talking the whole time. Do you think youll add a rain check to your own setup routine now, or is that old timer just gonna be your new best friend?
