Spent $80 on a floor lamp for my reading corner and I miss my old $12 clip light

Honestly, I went back and forth for weeks between a tall arc floor lamp and just clipping a cheap light to the shelf above my chair. I picked the floor lamp because it looked nicer, and it does look great in photos. But it throws light straight over my shoulder so the page sits in a shadow half the time. The $12 clip light pointed right where I needed it and I gave it away. Has anyone found a floor lamp that actually lights the page instead of the wall behind you?

What did the shade situation look like on that floor lamp? I had the same problem with a tall lamp I got for my chair, light going everywhere except the book. What fixed it for me was swapping the shade for a deeper drum shape that hangs lower than the bulb, so the light gets pushed down onto the page instead of shooting out sideways. I also tilted the whole thing closer to my shoulder and aimed the bulb back toward me, which sounds wrong but it worked. If your lamp has a swivel head or an adjustable arm, try pointing it down at like a 45 degree angle right at the book. A cheap fix is a small shade or even a piece of cardboard taped inside the top to block the top half of the bulb. Honestly the clip light wins on aim, but a floor lamp can get close if you mess with the shade and angle.

That line about tilting it closer to your shoulder and aiming the bulb back toward you sounds wrong but I get it, I did the same thing with mine and it actually worked once I stopped overthinking the angle. The deep drum shade trick is real too, I swapped mine for one that sits lower than the bulb and it stopped the light from spraying across the room. One thing that helped me was lining the inside of the shade with foil tape, keeps the light going down instead of leaking through the sides. If your lamp has that swivel head, point it down at like 40 degrees and pull the whole thing in so the shade is almost over your lap. Getting the bulb lower than eye level was the biggest thing for me, once I did that my eyes stopped getting blasted.
