My fairy lights melted a chunk of my bookshelf, and I'm still mad about it

Honestly, I had this whole cozy corner setup in my Denver apartment, string lights wrapped around the top shelf, nice warm glow, all that. Last month I came home and smelled burnt plastic. One of those cheap plug-in fairy light strands had gotten hot against the wood, and it actually melted a dark spot right into the shelf edge, plus killed three of my favorite paperbacks with that sticky residue. I tore everything down, sanded the spot, and repainted it, but now I refuse to put any light source within six inches of a book. Has anyone else had lights damage their setup, or am I the only one who trusted the aesthetic over basic physics?
