I hung my shelf brackets 6 inches apart and the whole thing looked like a smile until I redid it
I built a little reading nook shelf in my apartment in Boise last month and put the brackets 6 inches apart because I figured more metal meant more sturdy. The thing sagged in the middle like a hammock and all my paperbacks slid into the dip. After two days of staring at it I moved them to 16 inches apart at the studs and it sat dead flat. Turns out the spacing chart on the back of the bracket pack was there for a reason. Anyone else learn a shelf lesson the hard way, or am I the only one who ignored the directions?

My dad told me a story about a guy he worked with in Twin Falls who did the same thing, packed brackets every 8 inches thinking it would hold more weight. The wood just flexed between each one and made it worse, kind of like how too many nails can split a board. So yeah, the chart on the back is usually right.
