Book spines facing inward is a cozy crime

I visited a friend's place last month and she had her whole shelf arranged with the pages facing out. She said it looked cleaner and more uniform. I stood there for a solid minute trying to find a single title without pulling every book off the shelf. That's not cozy, that's a guessing game. The whole point of a reading nook is to grab something on a whim, not inspect a wall of anonymous paper. My own shelf has mismatched heights, faded spines, and one book sitting sideways because it doesn't fit. It feels lived in and warm. Am I the only one who thinks visible spines are part of the charm?
