Saw a tiny rental kitchen in Portland turn into the coziest spot with a $12 thrift store fix
Stayed at my cousin's place in Portland over the weekend and her kitchen was this sad beige box with one bare bulb on the ceiling. She had no budget, like maybe $40 total to work with. But she hung a $12 woven pendant shade from the thrift store over the sink and swapped the bulb for a warm 2700K one, and I swear the whole room changed. She also put a small amber glass jar with a tea light on the counter, just one little glow point. Then she leaned a framed botanical print against the backsplash instead of hanging it, which made the place feel lived in right away. I sat there with coffee at 7am and honestly felt like I was in a little cabin, not a rental kitchen. Now I want to do the same thing in my apartment but I'm stuck on the light part, does warm white actually make that big a difference or is it more about the shade itself?
The 2700K bulb is doing more than the shade, no question. A pendant shade only changes where the light lands, but the color temp changes the whole mood of the room. 2700K is that warm yellow glow, and 5000K is the blue white stuff that makes a kitchen feel like a dentist's office. Swap the bulb first, it's like two bucks, then worry about the shade.
That said, keep the shade dim and woven so it doesn't glare. And one tea light on the counter works because it's the only other light in the room, so don't add a second one along with it.
