My mother swore by her "one mug" rule for soup and it backfired hard

My mom kept telling me that any soup tastes better if you only use one specific ceramic mug she got at a thrift store in Portland. I finally tried it with my lentil stew last Tuesday and the whole batch came out tasting like old dishwasher soap. She swore the mug was seasoned, but I think it was just never washed right. Has anyone else dealt with a family member's weird kitchen superstition that ruined a meal?

See this is exactly what happens when people take kitchen superstitions too far. They start believing their own hype about some object instead of using basic common sense. The same people who swear by "seasoned" cast iron are the ones who think any old chipped mug from Goodwill has magical flavor powers. That mug was probably just harboring soap residue from years of bad washing habits. People love to attach meaning to random objects instead of admitting they just got lucky once with the right recipe.

@ray136 so do you think seasoning on cast iron is total BS or just overrated?
