Bought a $40 monitor arm and my neck stopped hurting in 3 days

I was using a stack of old textbooks to prop up my monitor for like a year. Finally grabbed a cheap gas spring arm from Amazon and it made such a difference. My desk feels way more open now without all those books taking up space. Has anyone else tried a monitor arm and found it fixed their posture problems?

Yeah the "stack of old textbooks" thing is so real, I was doing the same with some random cookbooks and it was a nightmare. The gas spring arms are honestly a game changer, I got one that clamps to the back of my desk and it freed up so much space. But more than the space, it really fixed my neck pain too because now I can tilt the screen up slightly instead of looking down all day. I've noticed I don't slouch forward as much when I'm typing either, probably because the monitor is at the right height to look straight ahead.

The gas arms are great but even a cheap vesa mount with a fixed arm is way better than stacked books. Once you get the screen at eye level it's tough to go back to anything else.

Sold my gas arm and went back to the fixed mount after I realized @michael_jenkins39 is right about the eye level thing but I kept bumping the gas arm with my coffee mug when I reached for my mouse. The cheap fixed ones are so low profile they basically disappear behind the monitor. I just wish they had more tilt range sometimes.
