My French press made better coffee after I stopped cleaning it every single day

After 5 years of scrubbing the mesh filter with soap daily, I left it rinsed but unwashed for 3 days in Denver and the cup had this smooth, oily depth I never got before, so am I the only one who thinks a little old residue is the real secret here?

You're onto something with the coffee oils, but it's not really about being dirty, it's about not stripping the seasoning like a cast iron pan. Soap kills those oils completely, so three days of just rinsing lets the good stuff build back up. I'd say stick with water only, but do a weekly deep clean with vinegar to keep mold from having a party in that mesh.
