I finally stopped chasing the fancy pour over trend

Everyone in this group raves about those $40 gooseneck kettles and 1:15 ratios, but honestly my $12 Walmart kettle and a paper filter straight into my old Mr. Coffee pot tastes just as good to me. I did a blind taste test last Sunday with my neighbor in Portland, we brewed 4 cups using the fancy method and 4 using my basic one, and we both picked the cheap version twice. The difference came down to the beans, I switched to a local roaster's Peruvian blend that's 3 weeks off roast, and that did more for flavor than any equipment upgrade ever did. Has anyone else ditched the expensive gear and just stuck with a simple drip machine?
