The neighbor kid who taught me the chair trick for sagging blanket roofs

Last month I was building a fort with my 7 year old neighbor and the middle kept sagging no matter how many pillows I stacked. He looked at me dead serious and said 'you gotta use the kitchen chair, it holds the sky up.' We grabbed a folding chair from his garage, wedged it under the sheet, and boom, perfect dome. Now I use that trick every time and I feel dumb for wasting 2 years on wobbly towers of books. Has anyone else found a random household item that totally changed their fort game?

Hang on, I gotta push back on this. The chair is a crutch, not a solution. You're basically building a tent with a pole in the middle, but the whole point of a blanket fort is the chaos, the unpredictable slopes, the feeling that you're inside a living creature that might collapse at any second. A perfect dome from a kitchen chair is just a sad, boring canopy. I've been using a stack of old board games plus a hockey stick wedged diagonally, and yeah, it sags a little, but that sag is what makes it feel like a real cave. Plus, the kid's 7, he's gonna grow out of this fort phase in like a year. You're not optimizing anything, you're just making a glorified umbrella. Let the blankets fall, embrace the wobbly books, that's where the real memories are.

Buddy of mine tried the "engineered" route with his kid. Bought one of those collapsible play tents, set it up perfect, even weighted the corners. Kid crawled in, looked around, and crawled right back out. Then the kid flipped it over and used it as a boat on the carpet. Meanwhile, my buddy's old fort from a table and a sagging sheet? Kid still talks about that one. @michael_jenkins39 is right, the jank is the magic. A fort that works too well is just furniture. The one that almost falls on you is an adventure.
