Memory foam was a mistake for my reading nook fort
I built this blanket fort last Tuesday with my old quilts and it felt perfect, but then I tried adding one of those memory foam mattress toppers as a floor cushion. It just swallows you, you sink in and can't prop yourself up against the couch cushions anymore, lost my whole reading angle. My 2014 setup with a stack of flat pillows and a folded duvet was way better for a 2 hour reading session. Has anyone else found that softer isn't always cozier for fort floors, or is it just me?
Did you ever try putting a thin blanket over the memory foam to firm it up? Because I went down this same road last winter and what finally worked was treating the foam like a base layer instead of the whole floor. I put a folded quilt on top of it, then two flat couch cushions on that, and suddenly I could sit up and read again without my back sliding into that sinkhole. The foam still gives you some softness underneath, it just stops being the thing you're fighting. The real problem with memory foam is that it's too good at its job, it molds to whatever position you're in and then refuses to let you shift. A fort floor needs to push back a little or your body has nothing to lean against for two hours. So softer isn't always cozier, you're right, but I'd say foam plus a firm top layer beats both setups alone.
