Overheard a teenager call hair spraying old school, got me thinking about the 80s
I was at the supply store near Tulsa and this young cosmetologist told her friend that hairspray is basically pointless now, like it's some ancient relic from our grandma's era. I just stood there holding my can of Sebastian Shaper and remembered back in 1987 when I used a whole can on one prom updo, that stuff could hold through a tornado. She's not wrong that texture sprays and dry shampoos do a lot more nowadays, but I still think there's a place for a good firm hold when you're doing an updo for a bride who's gonna be dancing for six hours. It got me wondering though, how many of you older stylists still reach for the aerosol on the regular, or have you fully switched over to the newer stuff?
Is she seriously saying hairspray is pointless? Try telling that to a bride with a slicked back bun in July humidity. I did a wedding last summer and used Aqua Net on the baby's breath crown, those flowers did not move one inch through the whole reception, and the dry texture spray would've let everything droop by the first dance. The new stuff is great for volume and grip at the roots, but it does not lock a style down the same way. I keep both on my shelf because they do different jobs. That kid will figure it out the first time a client comes back with a half fallen out updo.
