Paid $3,000 for a drone survey, then got better data from a $40 pole camera

The drone footage looked great in the office but couldn't see under the deck overhangs, so I spent another afternoon clamping a cheap action cam to a painter's pole and got the exact hanger heights I needed, why did I skip the obvious trick first?

Yeah I feel that one. I dropped cash on a fancy thermal scope for checking insulation once and it gave me all these pretty images but I still couldn't tell if the soffit vents were actually clear. Grabbed my wife's selfie stick and taped my phone to it, took like 20 pics from different angles and got the whole answer in ten minutes. The flashy gear looks great on the invoice but sometimes the dumb simple trick wins because you can get right up in the spots the drone can't reach. I learned to always ask myself what the cheapest tool that gets the job done is before I book the expensive stuff.
