Just realized the difference between a basic scheduling app and a real CPM tool on my last project

We tried using a free calendar app for a small office build-out, but it fell apart when a material delay hit. Switching to a proper critical path method software, like Procore's scheduler, instantly showed us the float and kept the whole job from stalling. Anyone have a good CPM tool they like for projects under 500k?

Procore's scheduler is solid, but it's a full project management suite, not just a CPM tool. For a stand alone scheduler on smaller jobs, I've had good luck with Smartsheet. It handles dependencies and float well without the big system overhead.

Forgot about the learning curve on those platforms. I mean, you can have the best scheduler in the world, but if your field guys can't figure out how to update their tasks from their phone, the whole schedule falls apart. I've seen crews just stop using it because it was too much hassle.

Wait, @kellys78, you're getting Smartsheet to handle float well? I tried it for a simple foundation pour and it kept breaking the logic when we had to shift a single task. Maybe my setup was wrong, but it felt like it needed constant babysitting.
