Broke a ratchet strap in Ohio and it clicked why my loads felt off

I was strapping down a mini excavator near Columbus last month and one of my 2-inch straps snapped clean. Turns out I was always hooking the ratchet on the same side as the winch, which put all the tension on one edge of the strap. Load shifted twice on the highway before I noticed. Anyone else find out they were routing straps wrong after a close call?
