Appreciation post: I thought tracked carriers were overkill for hauling, then a 14 ton excavator in El Paso proved me wrong
I ran a pull behind lowboy for years and swore a tracked carrier was just a money pit. Then a contractor in El Paso asked me to move a 14 ton excavator across a half mile of soft dirt to a job site. The lowboy sank to the axles twice and I was stuck for 3 hours. The tracked carrier walked it across in 45 minutes without a single rut. I still use the lowboy for highway work but I was wrong about tracked units for jobsite moves. Anyone else keep both setups depending on the ground?

Been running both for about eight years now and that El Paso story sounds familiar. Soft ground is where the tracked unit earns its keep, but you still need the lowboy for anything over about 20 miles or you're just burning time and fuel. One thing I learned the hard way, keep a set of mats or old railroad ties on the trailer for the spots where even tracks start digging in, saved me more than once on jobsites with buried debris. Curious what size carrier you went with, thinking about adding a second one for the smaller machines.
