Dropped $60 on a used geiger counter off ebay and it completely changed how I view radiation

Last month I bought a CDV-700 off a guy in Ohio for 60 bucks because I wanted to test some old uranium glass I collect. When I got it, I started checking random stuff around the house just for fun. My granite countertops read about triple the background level, which I knew was possible but still surprised me. Then I pointed it at a smoke detector and it went nuts - that little americium button is no joke. Has anyone else tested ordinary things around their house and found something that made you stop and think twice?

Relax, you'd need to eat like 500 bananas for it to matter at all.

My grandpa's old Fiestaware plates set off my meter from across the room.
