I finally switched from a wood hand float to a magnesium one for my patio pours last month in Tucson
Used to fight the surface tearing on every 5 yard slab in the heat, but the mag float pulls the cream up clean so I can finish before the sun bakes it, and my last 3 patios came out glass smooth.

Magnesium pulls heat out of the mix faster too, which is half the battle when it's 105 in the shade. I keep two mags in rotation and dunk them in a bucket of water between passes so the cream doesn't set up on the face of the float. That trick alone bought me an extra 10 minutes of working time on a 12x14 pour last summer. Wood just can't hang once the sun gets high.
