Vent: That IT guy who said 'just reboot' was right and I hate it
Some sysadmin at a client site told me to reboot a server instead of digging into the logs. I spent 45 minutes troubleshooting a DNS issue on site, then finally rebooted after he walked off. It fixed everything instantly. Now I feel dumb every time I skip the basic stuff first. Anyone else got a similar story where the simple fix stung your pride?

Wait, how many times does this have to happen before we finally learn our lesson though... I swear I've been through this exact same thing at least a dozen times where I'm so sure the problem is something complicated and I refuse to just try the stupid simple fix first. It's like my brain thinks that if I reboot without knowing why, I'm admitting defeat or something, but really I'm just wasting my own time digging through logs for an hour when a 30 second restart would have done the trick... There's something about pride that makes us want to outsmart the problem instead of taking the easy way out, even though the easy way always wins in the end.

Oh man, I once spent three hours reinstalling drivers before realizing the power strip was switched off (doh).
