Update: I quit pulling drives before reinstalls and it saved me a headache in Dayton
Three years ago I would not touch a machine without yanking the customer's old drive out first, mostly out of habit from my early shop days. Last month a regular brought in a Dell with a failing SSD and I left the drive in to pull data while I set up the new one, and it turned out the guy had 40GB of vacation photos he never backed up. Now I clone first and swap second, which added about 20 minutes per job but got me out of two angry phone calls already. The extra step feels slow on a busy Tuesday but the alternative is telling someone their files are gone. How do you all handle the clone versus fresh install call on a drive that still spins up?
