Unpopular opinion: most computer repair shops are just parts swappers

Overheard a dude at Micro Center in Austin last week bragging about how he doesn't even bother troubleshooting PSUs anymore, he just throws a new one in and hopes it works. Drove me nuts. I spent 20 years learning how to actually diagnose with a multimeter and scope, and these guys are just guessing with customer hardware. When did we stop caring about finding the root cause? Am I the only one who still checks voltages before replacing anything?

Thirteen years working on vintage arcade boards taught me that swapping parts without checking traces first just multiplies the problem.

Yeah, that's exactly how it goes. People want the quick fix and skip the real diagnosis. I see the same thing with car repairs or even just fixing a leaky faucet. Swap out a thermostat without checking if the wiring's degraded, and you're back to square one in a week. It's not just electronics either, it's the whole mindset of treating the symptom instead of the cause. Nobody wants to do the boring legwork of checking the basics first. But that's where the real problem lives nine times out of ten.
