Took me 6 years to realize I was grounding laptops wrong
I've been doing bench repairs since 2018 and always clipped my ESD strap to the metal chassis of whatever laptop I was working on. Last week a buddy from an old shop in Austin asked why I didn't use the grounded port on the mat instead. Told him it didn't matter, then he showed me a board that got zapped through the chassis because the PSU was still half connected. Switched my setup that same day, now I clip to the mat's ground point before anything else. Anyone else make this mistake or was it just me?

The "PSU was still half connected" thing is what gets people every time. I see it everywhere, not just repair benches. People unplug the big obvious thing and stop there, like pulling the plug on a TV but leaving the antenna hooked up, or shutting the water off but not draining the pipes before opening them. The scary part is always the leftover path nobody thinks about. Your buddy did you a solid. I keep my clip on the mat first now too, ever since a similar scare with a monitor that held a charge way longer than it should have. Funny how a tiny habit change fixes years of doing it wrong.
