Cleaning dust out of a CRT monitor this week...

It took me back to when every repair meant opening up the case. These days, so much is sealed or integrated, you just swap the whole board. Kinda bittersweet.

Yeah that's it exactly, it feels like we lost something basic. I see it everywhere now, not just with old TVs. Appliances, cars, even some furniture is designed so you can't open it up. If one little part breaks, you're stuck. It makes everything feel temporary and kind of cheap, even if it costs a lot. We're just left with swapping out whole units instead of understanding how things work. It cuts us off from the stuff we use every day.

Two hours into a CRT fix, I realized I was just rearranging the dust.

I remember the smell of warm electronics and that high-pitched whine from old CRT TVs. There was a real satisfaction in fixing something with just a screwdriver and some canned air. Now if a single chip goes bad, the whole thing is just scrap. I honestly miss that sense of actually fixing things instead of just replacing them.
