Bus driver's announcement about silent riders opened a debate in my head
Last Tuesday on the 6:15am route through Austin, the driver said 'good morning' to everyone and only three people responded. He then joked 'guess we're all too sleepy to be friendly today' and it got me thinking. Are we rude for not acknowledging each other on commutes, or is quiet just part of the unspoken deal? I've had days where a stranger's small talk made the ride better, but also times I just wanted to stare at my phone and zone out. What's the right balance for you all, do you speak up or stay silent?

Man, I had a driver once who tried to start a full on group conversation about the best breakfast tacos in town at 7am. Half the bus was asleep, one guy was trying to read his book, and I just wanted to stare out the window. But then this older lady two seats up actually answered him, and next thing I know we're all yelling about which taqueria has the better salsa. It was chaos, but honestly it was better than the usual dead silence. I still think about those tacos sometimes. Maybe the trick is that you can't force it, it just happens when someone takes the risk and it lands right.
