Still torquing my umbilical connectors by feel vs. the spec sheet, and I can't decide which way is right
When I came up in the Gulf back in 2011, nobody ever pulled out a torque wrench on a whip connector, you just snugged it till it felt right and moved on. Now every job I'm on wants a calibrated wrench and the exact number logged, last month in Port Fourchon we spent 40 minutes on four fittings getting them signed off. Half the old hands say over-tightening is what cracks the seals anyway, and the other half say the spec exists because somebody died learning it. I get that paper trails matter when insurance is watching, but I've never had a connector fail from feel. What are you all doing on your boats, wrench or wrist?
What does the spec sheet actually call for on your connectors? I started hitting them with a beam wrench at 60 ft lbs and stopped second-guessing, seals quit weeping after that.
