After 12 years underwater my dad pointed out I hold my knife wrong

Was doing a routine prop cleaning off Galveston last month and my dad came down to help. He's been diving since before I was born. He watched me cut a line and just said 'you're fighting the blade, flip your wrist.' Spent over a decade thinking I had my technique down. Had a few guys on my crew try it and half of them had the same issue. Anyone else get told some basic thing way later than they should have?

Relaxing your grip actually helps the blade do the work for you.

Right, because nothing says "I'm in control" like a death grip that fights the blade every step of the way. Who knew white-knuckling a knife wasn't the secret to clean cuts?

Oh, 100%, @kevin_west already hit the nail on the head. I used to grip my chef's knife like I was trying to strangle a snake, and every cut looked like a toddler's art project. Soon as I loosened up and let the blade just fall through a ripe tomato, it was like a religious experience. Now I just whisper "be the knife" and pretend I'm in a samurai movie, which is way more fun anyway.
