The guy at my local shop last week showed me how to read a back issue price guide right.

He said half the value is in the cover condition and I never even thought about that before, has anyone else been overpaying for graded books without checking the actual spine wear?

I mean sure, cover condition matters a lot but it's not exactly some secret that nobody knows about. Feels like a pretty basic thing any shop would tell you.

Half the time shops don't even mention it because they assume you're checking the whole book yourself. The number is just a shortcut, not the full story. A 9.6 with a dinged corner can look way worse than a clean 9.4 if you actually flip through it. People forget that the grade is a sum of multiple factors, not just the front cover. Sellers will absolutely let you overlook a soft spine if it means moving a higher graded copy at a premium. Always gotta pop the holder open or at least inspect the edges before you pull the trigger.

Wait, isn't that just common sense though? I got burned on a slabbed book a few months back because I was too busy staring at the grade number to actually look at the wear on the edges.
