That guy at the LCS told me Mark Millar was the worst writer ever

Last month a dude at my shop in Cleveland swore I was wasting money on Kick-Ass, said his stuff was all shock with no story. I read it anyway and honestly hated it, the violence felt empty and the characters were flat. Has anyone else had a recommendation from a random comic shop customer that just totally missed the mark?

A buddy at my local shop in Columbus swore Millar was overrated and I laughed it off back then. Tbh I read The Ultimates and thought it was cool, but after trying some of his other stuff like Wanted I started to see the problem. Ngl the shock value wears thin fast when the characters don't have any real depth to hold it together. I used to think people were just hating on popular stuff but now I get it. That random customer at your shop might have been onto something about Millar's work not aging well.

@tusan649 you nailed it, the shock value really does fade without real characters.

Ask him straight up if he ever actually liked any Millar book or just hates him because it's trendy. Cause I wonder if these shop guys have read stuff like Superman Red Son or Old Man Logan, which actually have some heart. Millar can write a good story when he wants to, it's just not his usual MO. His early work for Marvel had actual depth before he went full shock jock. So did that Cleveland guy actually give specific examples or just trash the whole catalog?
