Spent 3 weeks hunting a Silver Surfer #4 for my brother's birthday and my LCS guy found one in 2 days
So my brother turns 30 next month and his grail is Silver Surfer #4, the one with Thor on the cover. I spent 3 weeks straight on eBay and Facebook groups, lost 4 auctions, got outbid at the last second twice, and even drove to a shop in Sacramento that had a beat up copy for $400. Then I finally just asked the owner of my local shop, and he pulled a decent copy out of his back room in 2 days for $180. Now I'm stuck wondering if the hunt itself is half the fun, or if I just wasted 3 weeks being stubborn. One side says the chase makes the book mean more when you finally hold it. The other side says pay the fair price and spend that time actually reading. So which one is it for you guys?

There was a whole thread on a comic board about this exact thing last year. A guy tracked a Journey into Mystery for almost a year, then found one in a dollar bin at a show and said the win felt weird and empty. A few folks in there said the hunt builds the story you tell about the book, which is real. But most of them said a grail is a grail, and if the shop guy can get it for $180, that is just smart shopping. For a gift with a deadline, the hunt only matters if you enjoy losing auctions. Your brother gets the book either way, and he is gonna care way more about the Surfer than how you got it.
