My 11 year old nephew asked why Batman never just gives his money to Gotham and I have been thinking about it for a week
He was flipping through my copy of Year One on the couch Saturday and hit me with that question out of nowhere. I started to explain the whole thing about Bruce needing the suit and the symbol, but he just said so he could do both and honestly he is right. I have been collecting for 15 years and never once questioned why nobody in Gotham writes that story. Now I want to track down any run where Bruce actually tries the money angle and it goes sideways, so if anyone knows a good one let me know.
Your nephew is onto something but the money angle gets tried in Batman: The Animated Series, the episode where he funds a rehab program through Wayne Enterprises and it gets hijacked by crooks. That is the real answer and it is boring on purpose. Gotham is a pit because of the mob, dirty cops, and crooked judges, so dumping cash in does nothing but hand it to the people already running the place. Bruce knows that, which is why he puts on the suit. The kid is not wrong that he could do both, but the comics have shown a dozen times that the money alone just makes him a target.
