Hot take: a tool room guy in Dayton pulled my last 3 scrapped parts and showed me why the finish failed, and it rattled me
He put them side by side on his bench and pointed at the same chatter mark on all three, then asked when I last checked runout on my holder, which was back in March. Turns out the holder had walked about two thou and I had been blaming the feed and speed sheet the whole time. What's the smallest thing you've found behind a run of bad parts?
Man, that story hits home. Having someone lay it out like that, same mark on all three parts, is the kind of thing that keeps you up at night. Mine was a worn chuck jaw that had a tiny burr on it, took me two weeks of chasing my tail on a rough bore before I found it. I had swapped inserts, changed coolant, everything but the obvious thing right in front of my face. Good on that tool room guy for taking the time to show you instead of just handing you a lecture. That kind of help is worth its weight in gold.
