Warning: put my town's recycling in the garbage after the plant shut down, now I'm second guessing everything

Went through the same thing when our plant closed two years back. First, call your town office and ask where the stuff actually goes now, because a lot of places truck it to a nearby city and it still gets recycled. Second, if it really is going to the landfill, don't beat yourself up over it. One person's bins won't save or sink the planet. What you can do is cut down on what you buy in the first place, like skip the plastic bags and buy stuff with less packaging. Also write to your town board and ask them to find a new plant, because that's the only way this gets fixed for good. You did the right thing by caring. Most people don't even think about it.
