Thought recycling at my apartment was pointless until I actually tracked it for 3 weeks
I used to toss everything in one bin because I figured the building just dumped it all together anyway. Then our landlord in Cleveland put up a sheet showing the hauler's numbers, and curbside pickup here actually keeps about 60 percent of what we sort out of the landfill. So I started rinsing jars and flattening boxes for 3 weeks just to see, and my trash can went from overflowing twice a week to barely half full on pickup day. The part that got me was how much food I was throwing out, so I set aside scraps in a bucket and it filled up faster than I expected. Now I'm wondering if the city's compost drop-off at the farmers market is worth the walk. Has anyone tried one of those countertop bins, and do they actually keep the smell down?
