Thought my leaky basement was a $8k nightmare, turns out it was the downspout
Water was creeping across my basement floor in Parma every time it rained hard, and I was already picturing a full waterproofing quote. A guy I know from the hardware store on Ridge Road said to check my downspouts first, and sure enough one was dumping right against the foundation. $5 extension and a Saturday of digging later, the basement is dry. Anyone else get saved from a scary repair by something stupid simple?
How old is your house? Mine's from the 50s and I found two of these dumb problems in one year. The downspout was one, then later I noticed the dirt around the foundation had settled and was sloping TOWARD the house instead of away. Rain would just pool up against the wall. I hauled in a few wheelbarrows of topsoil and graded it back, maybe two hours of work, and that fixed a spot that was staying damp. Point is, before you call anybody, walk around the whole house during a hard rain and just watch where the water goes. It's wild how much of this stuff comes down to where the water lands, not the concrete itself.
