Showerthought: the guy at the hardware counter on Lorain said most folks buy a bigger water heater when the real fix is a $12 part
Stopped in for a shutoff valve and ended up behind a guy who was returning a whole 50 gallon heater. The counter guy looked at his old one, walked him through checking the dip tube, and turns out it was cracked, five minutes and a twelve dollar tube and the guy walked out with his money back. I stood there thinking about how many times I've seen folks drop $800 on a new unit when half the time it's the anode rod rusted out or the thermostat gone. Two years back my own heater started running cold and my first thought was replacement, but my buddy made me test the elements first, and sure enough one had died. Thirty bucks and an hour in the basement later it's still running fine. It's easy to jump to the big fix when a small one does the trick, especially when we're all busy. Anyway I finally swapped my own crusty shutoff out that afternoon and it turns smooth now, felt good for such a cheap job. Curious if anyone here has caught a repair shop or a sales guy steering them toward a full replacement when a part would have done it?
