Pro tip: your sump pump check valve is probably installed sideways and you won't know until the basement floods
I was helping my neighbor on West 130th after that big storm in April and noticed his check valve was mounted flat instead of vertical, which means it can't seal right when the pump kicks off. He had water pushing back into the pit every cycle for who knows how long and just thought his pump was getting old. How many of you have actually looked at the angle of your check valve, or am I the only one who learned this the hard way?
My check valve was installed so wrong that when I finally looked at it I just stood there staring like I'd found a raccoon in the pit. Reading the box after the fact is apparently a step people like me skip, and that little arrow on the side is there for a reason. Mine points down now, where it should have pointed up the whole time.
