Pro tip: my neighbor in Old Brooklyn told me to stop caulking over the old stuff and it saved my basement
Back in 2019 I was patching a leaky spot along my foundation in Old Brooklyn and just kept slapping new caulk right over the cracked old bead every spring. My neighbor Ray, who's been here since the 70s, watched me do it one Saturday and said "you're just hiding the problem, that water's still getting in behind it." So I scraped the whole joint down, pulled out about 40 years of old junk, and refilled it with hydraulic cement and fresh polyurethane. Four winters later and that corner is still dry, probably cost me $60 total. Has anyone else had an old timer call out their shortcut like that?
Four winters?! That is wild, because most of the caulk-over jobs I have seen fail within a single season up here. Forty years of old junk coming out of one joint is honestly gross to picture (and I bet it smelled amazing, ha). Ray sounds like the kind of neighbor everyone needs, the ones who just watch you mess up and then drop one line that changes how you do everything. I have to ask though, did the hydraulic cement crack at all after a couple freezes, or did it hold up the whole time?
