Just realized I've been ignoring my sump pump for years because it was dry
My neighbor in Old Brooklyn had a basement flood and said his pump's float switch was stuck. Checked mine and the battery backup was totally dead. How often do you guys actually test your sump systems?

My old sump pump in Lakewood lasted 12 years without a single test and never failed.

A dry sump pit doesn't mean the system is fine. The battery backup can still die from sitting unused. I test my main pump every few months by pouring water in the pit. The backup gets a full test twice a year, usually when the clocks change. It's the only way to know for sure it will work during a storm.
