Talking to a 74 year old Datsun owner made me rethink my whole restoration plan
Last Saturday I was at a car show in Des Moines and got chatting with this guy who had a 1973 Datsun 240Z, original paint, 180k miles, just driven there from Nebraska. I was telling him about my 68 Mustang project, how I was planning a full rotisserie restore, new everything, concours level. He just laughed and said, 'Son, I've had this Z for 41 years. I've replaced the clutch twice and the radiator once. Everything else is still factory. It's not a museum piece, it's a driver.' That hit me different because I've been chasing perfection for 3 years now, my car is in pieces in the garage, and I haven't taken it out once. He probably puts 5k miles a year on his and enjoys every one. Made me wonder if I'm building a car to show off or to actually drive. Has anyone else pulled back from a full restore and just did the minimum to get it on the road? How'd that work out?
