My uncle, a 40-year sweep, insisted I always carry a 6-inch mirror for a specific flue check. I thought it was old-school overkill until it saved a job in Olympia last Tuesday.

He said, 'You can't trust a camera to show you every pinhole in a clay liner joint.' Sure enough, the mirror caught a hairline crack the camera missed completely. Do you guys still use a mirror, or is it all digital inspection now?

Wow, my buddy had the same thing happen with a gas line last winter. His old inspection mirror found a tiny leak the fancy scanner totally missed.

Yeah @clairen85, sometimes the old tools just get it done.

Honestly, I'm the same way. I still use this ancient pair of scissors for everything, even though the handle is held together with duct tape. The new ones I bought just don't feel right in my hand. Sometimes you just get used to how a tool works, even if it looks beat up. It's like your hands know what to do without having to think about it. I'd probably mess things up with a shiny new gadget.
