Serious question, is it just me who thinks holding doors for strangers is getting weird?
I was at the post office in Savannah two Saturdays ago and this guy about my age, maybe 30, held the door for me from like 15 feet away. I did the awkward half jog, said thanks, and he just stared at me like I owed him something. Later that same trip a woman actually got annoyed when I held the door for her at the same spot, said she could handle it herself. Everyone online keeps saying door holding is just basic kindness, but my real life keeps telling me it lands different every single time. I still do it when someone is close, like 3 or 4 steps behind, because that feels normal, but the long distance ones feel like a power move now. Maybe the polite thing is to just walk through and let people handle their own doors unless they're carrying something heavy. Curious if anyone else has noticed this shift or if I'm just overthinking a door.
My buddy Marcus got chewed out at a gas station in Macon last month for holding the door from too far back. Woman told him she wasn't a charity case. But then his mom yelled at him for not holding one the next week, so there's no winning.
