Cashier asked if I found everything okay, I said no, and now I'm the bad guy?

At the Kroger on 5th last Tuesday, a cashier gave me the standard 'did you find everything okay?' line. I said actually no, the store was out of the no-salt seasoning I needed for a diet. She got all stiff and defensive. I'm not asking for a treasure hunt, just honesty. Is the polite script supposed to beat a straight answer, or are we all just supposed to lie to make the transaction smoother?
