I stood there for 10 minutes grinning and nodding at a man arguing with himself about the 2019 bus schedule before I caught my own reflection in the shelter glass and stopped cold.
Nodding at someone who is talking at you is not really the same as agreeing with them. It's more like a reflex we pick up so we don't look rude when we're stuck in a weird spot. I do the same thing at bus stops and in long lines at the store, just bobbing my head like a toy on a dashboard. The problem is some people read it as a real yes, and then they think you're on their side about the bus schedule or whatever. It's awkward because you can't really explain "I was just being polite" without making it worse. I have started doing the small smile with no nodding, and that seems to keep me out of trouble.
