Rant: I tried power stretching a berber in a Kansas City basement and the wrinkle came back in 4 days
Last month I took a job in a finished basement out in Kansas City and the berber had a fat ripple right at the doorway. Instead of pulling it up and restretching like I normally would, I tried power stretching it cold, just knee kicker and a stretcher head, figuring I'd save the homeowner a couple hundred bucks and save myself 3 hours. It looked dead flat when I left, I even ran my hand across it twice and felt nothing. Four days later the guy texts me a picture and that same ripple is back, maybe worse, right where the seam tape meets the pad. Turns out the pad had delaminated from the concrete and no amount of stretching was going to hold it, I was basically pulling on a loose skin the whole time. Pulled it up the second trip, scraped the old pad, laid new 8 pound and restretched it hot off the seamer, and it's been flat for 3 weeks now. So what I learned is check the pad before I ever reach for the stretcher, because a fast fix on bad pad is just a callback with a delay on it. Anybody got a trick for spotting delam under berber without pulling up a whole corner?
