Pulled a 12 foot seam apart with my own hands, then learned the iron was set too cold
Was stretching a berber in a rental off 5th in Eugene last Thursday and the seam right at the hallway opening let go when I hit it with the power stretcher. I had seamed it an hour before, so I stopped everything and re-did that whole run. Turned out my seaming iron was running around 300 degrees instead of 400, and I had been rushing the tape to beat the adhesive set time. Now I keep a cheap thermometer in the van and check it before every seam. What temp do you guys run on thicker berbers, and do you trust the dial on your iron or check it some other way?
Berber likes it hotter than 400 usually, like 425 to 450 depending on how thick the backing is, so 400 was probably already on the cool side for it. Dial on those irons drifts a lot, I check mine with an infrared gun on the plate before the first seam of the day. Cold iron plus rushing the tape is what got you, the glue never really kicked.
