My seaming iron was set too hot for 6 installs and I only figured it out from the smell
I kept blaming the seam tape for those little puckers on the Berber jobs, then a rep at a supplier demo in Tulsa asked what temp I was running and I had to admit I never checked it past the dial mark. Turned out I was about 40 degrees over what the backing wanted, and once I dropped it the seams laid flat on the first pass with no redo. What's your go-to way to check heat on an iron that doesn't have a real readout?
My buddy runs a two-man crew out of Wichita and he uses a cheap infrared thermometer from Harbor Freight, like 20 bucks, points it right at the seam plate before every job. Caught his iron running 310 when the tape wanted 265 on a commercial glue-down last spring. He said the puckers quit that same week. Takes him five seconds and he keeps the thing clipped to his tool bag.
