My old foreman told me to always crown my joists up, and after 12 years I finally tested it
Honestly I always thought that rule was just something old guys repeat because their old guys said it. So last month I framed a 16x20 deck in Boise and laid half the joists crown up and half crown down, just to see. The crown down ones sagged about 3/8 inch more over the 16 foot span within 3 weeks, measured with a string line. Tbh I felt like a fool for doubting him, but now I want to know if anyone else has actually measured this or if I just got lucky with that one batch of lumber.
